LIVINGSTON,
Ala.—
The University of West Alabama last week hosted the Alabama State Council on the Arts quarterly meeting, showcasing a variety of Sumter County artists. The Council awarded over $2 million in grants to support the arts in Alabama, including four grants for Sumter County initiatives, at the Sept. 8 and 9 meeting.

Sumter County musicians Jacky Jack White and J. Burton Fuller entertained Alabama State Council on the Arts members during their recent meeting held on the University of West Alabama campus.

UWA received $4,300 in support of the Sucarnochee Folklife Festival, which celebrates regional cultural traditions and features folksingers, demonstrators of traditional crafts, historical tours of local churches, folk food and storytelling. The fourth annual festival, held in downtown Livingston, is set for April 21, 2007.

The Sumter County Fine Arts Council also received nearly $3,000 to help fund performances by the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble and the Birmingham Children’s Theatre on UWA’s campus. Additionally, the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture in York received $13,615 for workshops and exhibitions.

The University treated Council members with a performance by Sucarnochee Revue radio show regulars Jacky Jack White and J. Burton Fuller over a luncheon in the Bell Conference Center. Sumter Theatre Workshop also presented “Side by Side by Sondheim” in an evening performance sponsored by the Sumter County Fine Arts Council. Conference attendees also participated in a walking tour of the University’s outdoor sculpture collection and enjoyed a presentation of handmade mosaic stepping stones to be used in UWA’s Black Belt Gardens.
