LIVINGSTON,
Ala.—When
Dr. Neil Snider, Director of UWA’s Julia Tutwiler
Library and gallery curator, saw the work of
Montgomery’s Booker T. Washington Magnet High School
photography students at Kentuck Festival of the
Arts, he knew he wanted to bring an exhibit to
campus. This semester, photographs by 13 BTWMHS
sophomores, juniors and seniors are on display in
The University of West Alabama’s Webb Hall Gallery.

Students, faculty, staff and community
members enjoyed the exhibit during the
opening reception held August 31. |
BTWMHS photography instructor Andy Meadows says he
is happy his students have the chance to show their
work in Livingston.
“This exhibit is great for my students,” Meadows
said. “It is exciting for them to watch others
examine their work and form ideas about the
photographs.”
The students, who chose photography from 17 other
concentrations offered at the magnet high school,
begin the program making cameras out of oatmeal
boxes. They learn 35mm and digital photography and
historical and modern processes. Examples of many
types of photography can be seen in the exhibit.
In addition to mastering technical skills, Meadows
says the students’ conceptual growth is very
important in developing their art.
“The students go from taking pictures,” he
explained, “to understanding ‘What does the image
say about who I am?’”
Developing the photography program according to his
own design, Meadows says the students will have the
equivalent to a BFA after three years of study at
BTWMHS. Exhibits like this one at UWA add to the
students’ overall experience.
The photography exhibit is open Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the end of the
fall semester. For more information, please contact
