UWA graduates and faculty honored at commencement

LIVINGSTON, Ala.--The University of West Alabama honored approximately 300 graduates during spring commencement exercises May 3, with President Richard D. Holland conferring undergraduate and master’s degrees from the colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics; the Division of Nursing; and the School of Graduate Studies. In addition, several special awards were presented to students, faculty and friends of UWA.


President Richard D. Holland and Provost David M. Taylor present Morrison with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

 

Neal Gregory Morrison of Cullman, interim president of Bevill State Community College and a former member of the Alabama House of Representatives, received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University.

 

Lindsay Marks of Meridian, Miss., received the Ralph M. Lyon Award, given annually to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average. A biology graduate, she is the daughter of Dennis and Linda Marks.              

 

Dr. Stephen Slimp, associate professor of English, received the William E. Gilbert Award for Outstanding Teaching, which annually recognizes excellence in classroom instruction at UWA. A two-time winner, Slimp also received the award in 1999.

 

In addition, five longtime professors were honored for their service to the University. Sylvia Homan was named Emeritus Professor of Nursing. Dr. Alvin Marson was honored as Emeritus Professor of Education. Dr. Julia E. Massey earned recognition as Emeritus Professor of Mathematics. James H. Todd received the distinction of Emeritus Professor of Computer Information Systems, and Dr. Billy L. Ward was named Emeritus Professor of Management.
