LIVINGSTON,
Ala.--The
University of West Alabama formally dedicated the
Charles F. Loveless Collection in Literature at the
Julia Tutwiler Library on Homecoming. The
collection, a gift from alumnus Joseph Musso of
Birmingham, is named in memory of long-time English
professor Charlie Loveless, who taught English
composition and literature at UWA for 25 years.
Musso, a 1984 journalism graduate, presented the
University with over 1,600 books for the Loveless
Collection, which is housed on the second floor of
the Tutwiler Library. He plans to send more books
every year to add to the collection.
“I hope these books will help fill in gaps at the
University’s library,” Musso said. “My collection
consists mostly of books that I have to buy because
you cannot find them on library shelves. Many are
not well-known authors.”
“We are most grateful for Joe’s donation,” said Dr.
David Taylor, Provost and English professor. “Among
the books are collector’s editions, signed copies
and brand new books read only once by Joe.”
Musso’s vast book collection consists of works from
early Greek tragedy to contemporary poetry. Musso,
whom Taylor calls the most widely read person he
knows, had acquired a vast assortment of American
and international literature spanning every genre.
“After Charlie passed away in February 2005, I knew
it was time to give the books to UWA because he is
the perfect person to honor with this gift,” Musso
said.
