LIVINGSTON,
Ala.--The nationally syndicated radio program, The
Sucarnochee Revue, takes the stage Friday, Sept. 21
at 7 p.m. for a live taping in The University of
West Alabama’s Bibb Graves Auditorium. The show
introduces radio listeners in Alabama, Mississippi,
and importantly, other parts of the nation and the
world to the artistic community of performers from
the Black Belt region. The Sucarnochee Revue,
sponsored by UWA and Weyerhaeuser Company, can be
heard on radio stations across the country.
Now in its fourth year of production, The
Sucarnochee Revue presents Black Belt music in its
most authentic manner. The show not only preserves
original music and the works by original artists,
but also captures the evolution of that music and
its current generation of performers.
“What surprises people about the show is the
fantastic range of musical genres,” producer and
host Jacky Jack White said. “We have blues, jazz,
Dixieland, gospel, bluegrass, classical, country and
more. Historically, there is an incredible amount of
talent in the area.”
The September lineup includes Nashville songwriter
George Teren, who has written No. 1 hits such as Tim
McGraw’s “Real Good Man” and Brad Paisley’s “When I
Get Where I'm Going.” He has also written numerous
hits for country artists Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt,
Gary Allen, Billy Ray Cyrus and Neal McCoy.
American Celtic band Henri’s Notions has played the
Tuscaloosa music scene for many years. Along with
playing at countless festivals and concerts, the
group has opened for folk icons including Bob Dylan
and The Kingston Trio and top Celtic acts such as
The Tannahill Weavers, Patrick Street, Paddy O'Brian
and more.
Deemed the next Charley Pride by several Nashville
music magazines, Carl Ray has been a forerunner and
advocate for African-American country singers.
Believing that people of color will have a voice in
the country music industry in the future, Ray has
been interviewed by the Associated Press, Billboard
magazine, U.S.News & World Report and many other
publications.
The Sucarnochee Revue regulars will round out the
show. The regulars include Jacky Jack White, J.
Burton Fuller, Britt Gully, Track 45 and Mississippi
Chris Sharp and the Jangalang String Band.
The Sucarnochee Revue returns to UWA on Oct. 19,
before the radio show hits the road this fall with a
performance at Tuscaloosa’s Bama Theatre on Oct. 26.
General admission to The Sucarnochee Revue is $5.
