LIVINGSTON,
Ala.—The
University of West Alabama again posts record
enrollment, with a total of 3,633 on-campus and
online students taking classes at the institution
this fall, according to University registrar
Clarence Egbert.
The 17 percent enrollment increase from fall 2005 is
due a three percent growth on the Livingston campus
and a 49 percent growth of students taking classes
over the Internet.
“We are pleased with the growth of our University,”
President Richard Holland said. “UWA offers quality
programs and a caring environment. We will continue
growing each year as prospective students learn more
about our institution and visit our beautiful
campus.”
This is the third consecutive year of on-campus
enrollment growth for UWA. The addition of 59
on-campus undergraduates, an increase of three
percent over last year, helped boost on-campus
enrollment to the highest mark in the past decade.
This fall’s entering freshman class also scored
better on the ACT college entrance exam than the
previous class, with an average score of 20.2 out of
a possible 36. Recruiting better students, an area
Holland says the University is working on, improves
retention and keeps enrollment numbers up.
UWA’s online enrollment is up 49 percent from a year
ago, with 1,509 students taking advantage of the
more flexible schedules offered by this type of
coursework. When the University’s began its online
program in 2002, only 13 students were signed up.
The popularity of the program, which now offers 14
master’s degrees and two bachelor’s degrees, is
evidenced by the growth in enrollment in only four
years.
