UWA receives $35,000 for Environmental Sciences endowment--The University of West Alabama recently received $35,000 to increase the Alabama Power College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Endowed Scholarship Fund to $50,000. The endowment comes from the Alabama Power Foundation and is earmarked for undergraduate or graduate students in UWA's environmental sciences program. Read more
 
Mr. and Ms. UWA, Favorites chosen--In a recent campus-wide election, University of West Alabama students recognized a pair of seniors who exemplify the University experience by honoring Kaylan C. McDuff of Moundville as Mr. UWA and Audrey McClendon of Greensboro as Ms. UWA. Students also elected eight juniors and seniors as UWA Favorites. Read more
 
Cornbread Cookoff finds Black Belt's best iron skillet chefs--Cornbread chefs, get your iron skillets ready and bring your winning recipes to the Sucarnochee Folklife Festival Cornbread Cook-off on Saturday, April 21 in downtown Livingston. Read more
 
Blues musicians pay tribute to the late Vera Hall--Now in its fourth year, the Sucarnochee Folklife Festival features a special concert Saturday, April 21 by Alabama bluesman Willie King and the Alabama Blues Project in memory of Sumter County blues legend Vera Hall. Additionally, the Alabama Blues Project, with the help of the Sumter County Historical Society, will erect a historical marker in memory of Hall, a 2005 inductee into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame. Black Belt scholars come to UWA for lunch presentation--The University of West Alabama welcomes a pair of university administrators and authors for the Black Belt Scholars Luncheon and Book Signing on Friday, April 20 at noon at the Bell Conference Center. The featured presenters are Dr. Robert W. Halli, Dean of the University of Alabama Honors College, and former UWA provost and history professor Dr. James P. Pate. Read more
 
  
Tigers split with Mars Hill, capture series--The 16th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Mars Hill College, as the Tigers claimed game one, 16-0, to clinch the series, but fell 11-1 in the second contest of the day at Tartt Field. Read more
 

UWA earns split during second day of tourney action--For the second consecutive day, the UWA softball team split a pair of games at the Gulf South Conference Crossover, losing the opener to Henderson State, 6-0, and beating Christian Brothers, 5-2, Friday afternoon. Read more

  
Tuscaloosa County Alumni Chapter meeting--The Tuscaloosa County Chapter of the National Alumni Association will meet Tuesday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Dogwood Bar Room at Indian Hills Country Club. Choctaw County Alumni Chapter crawfish boil--The Choctaw County Chapter of the National Alumni Association will hold its annual crawfish boil Thursday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. The event, which takes place at the Utsey camp house outside of Butler, brings UWA coaches, staff, alumni and friends to Choctaw County. Proceeds from the event will help fund scholarships for Choctaw County students to attend UWA.     • Opening reception for the UWA Student Art Show. 1-3 p.m. in Webb Hall Parlor. Student art will remain on display in Webb Hall Gallery through the summer.
    • Black Belt Garden stepping stone dedication. Presented by artist Linda Munoz and Sumter County schoolchildren. 4 p.m. at the Jack Pleasant Greenhouse.
    • UWA Film Series presents "Psycho" with a presentation by Dr. Alan Brown. 6 p.m. in Wallace Hall Auditorium.
    • The UWA Spring Semester James Colquitt Faculty Colloquium. "Report from Abu Dhabi, UAE: Education without Boarders International Students Conference" presented by Mary Pagliero, Denys Lupshenyuk and Clayton Tartt. 6 p.m. in the Callaway School with a reception  to follow in the Moon House.

    • Brown bag luncheon featuring artist Matthew Chase-Daniel's presentation "Making Art From Native Materials." Noon at the Callaway Schoolhouse. Held in conjunction with the Sucarnochee Folklife Festival.
    • Reading of the Spring 2007 issue of The Sucarnochee Review, UWA's student-published literary magazine, with a reception following. Hosted by the Department of Languages and Literature at 6 p.m. at the Callaway Schoolhouse.
  • April 19--"It's All in the Family" Alabama authors panel featuring  Sena Jeter Naslund, John Sims Jeter and William and Loretta Cobb with moderator Don Noble. 6 p.m. in the Bell Conference Center. Free admission. Held in conjunction with the Sucarnochee Folklife Festival.
  • April 20
    • Black Belt Scholars luncheon featuring Dr. James Pate and Dr. Robert Halli. Noon at the Bell Conference Center. A book signing in Webb Hall Parlor will follow the lunch. The event is free for UWA students, but a $5 contribution is requested from other attendees. Please RSVP to Dr. Tina Jones at tnj@uwa.edu or (205) 652-3752. Held in conjunction with the Sucarnochee Folklife Festival.
    • The Sucarnochee Revue. 7 p.m. in Bibb Graves Auditorium. Admission is $5. Free for students and Sumter County Fine Arts Council members.

Featuring Sucarnochee 5K River Run at 8 a.m., Cornbread Cook-off at 9:30 a.m., live music headlined by bluesman Willie King, artists and folk craft demonstrators, storytelling, ghost tour and more.
