UWA holds commencement exercises May 3--The University of West Alabama will honor 285 graduates during spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 3, 2008. The ceremony takes place at 10:30 a.m. in Pruitt Gymnasium on the UWA campus, with the Presidential Reception open to all graduates and their guests beginning at 8 a.m. in the Bell Conference Center. UWA dedicates James Suttles Entrepreneurship Institute--University of West Alabama officials this week formally dedicated the newly created James Suttles Entrepreneurship Institute, which was made possible by a $350,000 gift to “The University We Will Be” campaign from James Suttles of Demopolis, founder and president of Suttles Truck Leasing, Inc. Tucker joins Gov. Riley for Alabama mission to China--Dr. Ken Tucker, dean of The University of West Alabama’s College of Business, recently returned from Gov. Bob Riley’s nine-day Alabama Trade and Business Development Mission to China. Read more
 
UWA honors retirees--The University of West Alabama honored 13 longtime employees for their years of dedicated service at a recent retirement reception held at the end of the spring semester.  Read more
 
UWA honors longtime employees--The University of West Alabama recently honored 35 longtime employees for their years of service to the Livingston institution. UWA presented custom-designed gold or silver lapel pins, some adorned with rubies and diamonds, to those with tenure of 10 years or longer. Two staff members were honored for 35 years of service. UWA hosts Black Belt geography expert--Alabama Humanities Foundation lecturer Dr. Terance Winemiller will be on the The University of West Alabama campus Monday, May 12, for a presentation at 11 a.m. at the Callaway Schoolhouse. “Alabama’s Black Belt: A Geography of Space and Place,” is free and open to the public. UWA officially dedicates Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility--The University of West Alabama Department of Athletics recently dedicated its indoor practice facility located at the UWA Baseball Complex on April 19. The state-of-the-art, 11,250 square foot training center henceforth will be named the Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility. Read more
 
#17 Tigers sweep West Georgia--The 17th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team secured the #2 seed from the Gulf South Conference East Division, as the Tigers (42-9, 13-5 GSC) swept West Georgia on Sunday afternoon, 11-9 and 19-4. Read more
 
UWA knocks off No. 2 UAH--The University of West Alabama softball team closed out the 2008 campaign knocking off 2nd-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville, 6-5 with a seventh inning comeback by the Tigers. The second game of the twinbill was canceled in the second inning by rain showers in Livingston with UAH leading 5-2. Read more
 
  
UWA/Coca-Cola Golf Tournament for Academic Excellence--The annual two-person scramble is set for Saturday, May 10 with a  9 a.m. tee time at the Livingston County Club. $150 per team includes a barbecue lunch. First prize-Nike drivers, Second prize-Nike shoes. Space is limited to 32 teams. Please register by May 2 by calling 205-652-3852 or pre-register online here.
 
Choctaw County alumni meeting--The Choctaw County Chapter of the National Alumni Association will hold its annual spring meeting and silent auction Wednesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at Bama Crawfish in downtown Butler. The event brings UWA coaches, staff, alumni and friends to Choctaw County. Proceeds from the event will help fund scholarships for Choctaw County students to attend UWA. Wilcox County alumni fish fry--The Wilcox County Chapter of the National Alumni Association will hold its annual fish fry Saturday, May 17 at noon at Bridgeport State Park in Camden.
