UWA honors retirees--Six
employees were honored for their years of dedicated
service to UWA at a recent retirement reception. The
honorees included, from left, Shirley Boyd,
housekeeping staff supervisor; B. J. Speight, grounds
crew; Dr. Gary Stone, professor and chairperson of
the Division of Technology; Madelyn Mack, associate
professor of education; and Dr. Joe Wilkins, former
professor and dean of the School of Graduate
Studies. Former men’s basketball head coach Rick
Reedy (not pictured) was also recognized. As a thank
you for many years of devotion to the institution,
each retiree received a personalized wooden UWA
chair from the University. |

Commencement set for May 5--The
University of West Alabama will honor nearly 300
graduates during spring commencement exercises
Saturday, May 5, 2007. The ceremony takes place at
10:30 a.m. in Pruitt Gymnasium on the UWA campus,
with the Presidential Reception open to all
graduates and their guests beginning at 8:30 a.m. in
the Bell Conference Center.

Memories wanted for 175th anniversary
celebration--With planning
underway for UWA’s 175th anniversary celebration in
2010, alumni are sharing their memories, their
photographs and other college treasures with the
University. Recently, UWA received a graduation
scrapbook from the daughter of a 1920 graduate of
State Normal College, as the University was known
when the school offered both secondary education and
normal school programs for the training of teachers.

SIFE team wins at regional competition--The
University of West Alabama SIFE (Students in Free
Enterprise) team returned to Livingston as winners
after participating in the Atlanta SIFE USA Regional
Competition on April 4-5. UWA placed for the ninth
consecutive year, earning second runner-up at the
event, one of 17 SIFE USA Regional Competitions
being held across the United States in March and
April.

Printing department wins national award--The
UWA Department of Printing Services, under the
direction of Jimmy Robinson, recently won a first
place Gold Award at the annual In-Plant Printing and
Mailing Association contest. The department received
the award for its UWA Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition
brochure. Out of 555 entries nationwide, only 22
Gold Awards were given. These winners will be judged
for Best in Show in June. For more more information

East Division champs sweep West Georgia--The
20th-ranked University of West Alabama
baseball team clinched the Gulf South Conference
East Division Championship outright on Sunday
afternoon, finishing off the three-game sweep of
West Georgia in a 6-2 victory at Tartt Field.

Tiger
Wranglers head for CNRF--The
University of West Alabama wranglers completed its
final rodeo before the Collegiate National Finals
Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. in June, as the wranglers
participated in the Northwest Mississippi Community
College rodeo this past weekend.

Seniors carry Tigers to split with West Georgia--Shannon
Goggins and Heather Shugart homered in the first
game Friday afternoon as the UWA softball team took
the opening contest against West Georgia 2-1 in nine
innings on Senior Day, but dropped the second game,
11-0 in five innings as the Tigers split in Gulf
South Conference action.

men drop pair at GSC tournament--The
University of West Alabama men’s tennis team fell
Saturday in the Gulf South Conference Tournament 5-0
to No. 12 Ouachita Baptist and Harding, 5-3 at
Henderson State University.

Montgomery Area Chapter of the National Alumni
Association will meet Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m.

| Wilcox County Alumni Chapter fish fry--The
Wilcox County Chapter of the National Alumni
Association will hold its annual fish fry Saturday,
May 19 at noon at Bridgeport State Park in Camden. Proceeds from the event
will help fund scholarships for Wilcox County
students to attend UWA. The event will also honor
the memory of chapter president Claude Ezell. For

| Bedwell elected Delta Kappa Gamma state
president--Faye
Bedwell (’60, ’90)
of Livingston was recently elected Alabama state
president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International, a professional honor society for
women educators. The organization promotes
professional and personal growth of women educators
and excellence in education. Bedwell, who takes
office July 1, will serve a two-year term working
closely with Alabama chapters and attending regional
and international conferences. A retired junior high
English teacher, Bedwell has 38 years of experience
in education. She is a member of the Alpha Chi
chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, which includes women
from Sumter and Greene counties. |
