Miss
UWA 2008--Stevi Bolen of Jackson
is the new Miss University of West Alabama. Bolen,
a junior English major, was crowned in the Feb. 7
program. She will represent the 173-year-old
institution in the 2008 Miss Alabama Pageant this
summer in Birmingham, a preliminary to Miss America.

Chinese Fulbright Scholar
continues UWA lecture series--The
University of West Alabama continues the 2008
Fulbright Lecture Series as the College of Business
welcomes Chinese human resources management scholar
Dr. Jianmin “James” Sun, who was chosen to teach
this year in the University of Florida’s College of
Business. The second of four Fulbright scholars
visiting UWA this semester, Sun will present a
public lecture, “Chinese culture and the development
of China” on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. in UWA’s
Bell Conference Center.

UWA's Community and
Economic Impact Grants fund vital projects for
several area municipalities--Through
the University of West Alabama’s Division of
Outreach Services, four area towns and cities will
receive assistance to grow and develop their
communities through the University’s Community and
Economic Impact Grant Program.

Sumter County Fine Arts Council presents “See There
in the Distance: A Tribute to Marian Anderson,”
created and performed by opera singer Ruby Hinds, on
Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of
West Alabama’s Bibb Graves Auditorium.

University of West Alabama and the Greene/Sumter
Enterprise Community, Inc. are offering free income
tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance Program (VITA), sponsored by the IRS.

The Sucarnochee Revue radio show returns to UWA--The
Sucarnochee Revue, the nationally syndicated radio
program that showcases Black Belt music to listeners
across the nation and the world, returns to The
University of West Alabama Feb. 22, beginning the
fourth year of the popular musical variety show. The
live taping begins at 7 p.m. in Bibb Graves
Auditorium, with this show also being filmed by the
Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel.

clinches series over Georgia Southwestern--The
fifth-ranked University of West Alabama baseball
team claimed the series against Georgia
Southwestern, as the Tigers (6-1) trounced the
Hurricanes 18-7 in the fourth game of the series.

hosts North Alabama in "Think Pink" contest--The
UWA women’s basketball team returns to action on
Monday, February 11, as the Tigers (9-12, 4-2 GSC)
host divisional and in-state rival North Alabama in
GSC play. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. All fans are
encouraged to wear pink to contest, as the Tigers
are hosting a “Think Pink” fund raiser to raise
money for the Kay Yow/Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund.

host lions to start second half of GSC play--Currently
riding a three-game winning streak, the University
of West Alabama men’s basketball team will start the
second half of Gulf South Conference action, hosting
in-state rival North Alabama in a 7:30 p.m. contest
at Pruitt Hall.

Men's
tennis moves to 3-0; UWA women top Belhaven--The
University of West Alabama men’s tennis team picked
up two more wins on Saturday, knocking off NCAA
Division I opponent, Jackson State and topped
Belhaven in the afternoon match. The UWA Women split
matches on the day, falling to JSU but rebounded to
turn back Belhaven.

Tigers drop twinbill on final day of UWA Invite--The
University of West Alabama softball team dropped a
twinbill on the final day of the 2008 UWA
Invitational on Saturday, falling 9-1 to No. 16
North Georgia College and State in the first game
and concluding the day with a 7-5 decision to
Ouachita Baptist.
