UWA
honors alumnus, former faculty at fall commencement--In
addition to the more than 600 graduates honored
during fall commencement exercises, The University
of West Alabama recognized a distinguished alumnus
and three former faculty members for their
outstanding achievements. Andrew I. Killgore
received an honorary Doctor of Laws, while former
professors Violet M. Reed and Richard L. Thurn were
inducted into the Society of the Golden Key, the
highest honor bestowed upon a UWA graduate or
faculty member. Longtime professor Dr. Richard L.
Buckner was named Emeritus Professor of Biology.

Kansas City Barbeque Society judging school comes
to UWA--Officials
from the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the largest
society of barbecue enthusiasts in the world, will
soon be in Livingston, Ala., teaching tasters how to
rate ribs and evaluate brisket.

Sumter County students' photography on display--Sumter
County High and Livingston Junior High students have
been photographing images of their daily lives for
the 100 Lenses Project, and their work will be
displayed beginning Jan. 17 at UWA's Webb Hall
Gallery.

UWA welcomes Pakistani Fulbright Scholar--The
University of West Alabama kicks off the 2008
Fulbright Lecture Series as the College of Liberal
Arts welcomes Pakistani scholar Dr. Raj Wali Shah
Khattak, who currently serves as Fulbright
Scholar-In-Residence at the University of
Pennsylvania’s Department of Anthropology. Khattak
will present a public lecture, “Pashtuns: their
culture, language and literature,” on Tuesday, Jan.
29 at 6 p.m. at UWA’s Brock Y-Hall.

women edge UAH--UWA's women’s
basketball team erased a 26-point deficit to snap a
four-game losing streak and earn its first
conference win of the season in a 76-74 overtime win
of the University of Alabama in Huntsville at Pruitt
Hall on Saturday afternoon.

drop conference lid-lifter to UAH, 76-66 --The
University of West Alabama men’s basketball team
fell 76-66 to the University of Alabama in
Huntsville in the Gulf South Conference opener on
Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

Cecil
Fielder to speak at UWA Grand Slam Dinner--The
University of West Alabama baseball team will host
the Eighth Annual Grand Slam Dinner on Thursday,
January 31 in the Bell Conference Center on the UWA
campus. The guest speaker this year will be former
major league baseball player Cecil Fielder. The
dinner begins at 6:00 p.m.
