James Suttles
Entrepreneurship Institute to impact regional
economic development--With the
newly created James Suttles Entrepreneurship
Institute, The University of West Alabama’s College
of Business will provide Black Belt residents with
the knowledge and skills to launch new endeavors,
while retaining and expanding existing small
businesses in the region. The Institute is made
possible by a $350,000 gift to “The University We
Will Be” campaign from James Suttles of Demopolis,
founder and president of Suttles Truck Leasing, Inc.

UWA welcomes botanist for climate change lecture--The
University of West Alabama College of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics welcomes Samford
University’s Dr. Lawrence J. Davenport, director of
the university’s Vulcan Materials Center for
Environmental Stewardship and Education, for a
public lecture Thursday, January 31 at 4 p.m. in
Bibb Graves 109. The topic, "Potential Effects of
Climate Change on Alabama's Plant Life," will
provide an interesting look at the possible effects
of global warming in the state.

Miss UWA pageant to crown Feb. 7--Six
students from across Alabama will vie Thursday, Feb.
7 for the title of Miss University of West Alabama.
The annual public program will select a campus
representative to the Miss Alabama pageant, a Miss
America preliminary held this summer in Birmingham.
The pageant begins at 7 p.m. in Bibb Graves
Auditorium. Admission is free.

University of West Alabama women’s basketball squad
dropped a hard fought 71-59 contest to No. 13
Valdosta State on Saturday night at the P.E. Complex
on the VSU campus.

41-point second half surge by Valdosta State was too
much for the University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team as it dropped a 74-62 decision to
the Blazers on Saturday night at the P.E. Complex on
the VSU campus.

Fuentes selected to GSC Fall 2007 All-Academic Team;
UWA places 29 on Academic Honor Roll--The
University of West Alabama’s Mitch Warfield and
Amanda Fuentes have been selected to the Gulf South
Conference Fall 2007 All-Academic Team, and UWA
placed 29 student-athletes on the GSC Academic Honor
Roll.
