Thank
you from UWA--Winton and Naomi
Wise were honored last week for their outstanding
service to The University of West Alabama and to the
region. Winton, a 1949 graduate, served as a member
of the UWA Board of Trustees for 24 years. After 40
years in Livingston, the Wises have moved to Bay
Minette to be closer to their family. Pictured at
the reception given in the couple’s honor are, from
left, Dr. Richard Holland, Naomi Wise, Pam Wise
Carney, Jodi Wise Campbell, Dr. David Taylor, Winton

McDowell and Turner awarded UWA honorary
doctorates--In addition to the
more than 450 graduates honored during fall
commencement exercises, The University of West
Alabama awarded two Alabamians, artist Ronald W.
McDowell and preservationist Gwyndolyn C. Turner,
with honorary doctorates in recognition of their
outstanding achievements.

Miss UWA pageant Feb. 2--Ten
students from Alabama and Mississippi will vie
Friday, Feb. 2 for the title of Miss University of
West Alabama. The annual public program to select a
campus representative to the Miss Alabama Pageant in
Birmingham begins at 7 p.m. in Bibb Graves
Auditorium.

UWA welcomes Chinese Fulbright Scholar--The
University of West Alabama welcomes Chinese
Fulbright Scholar Dr. Meng Deng on Thursday, Feb. 8
at 7 p.m. in Brock Y-Hall. Hosted by the College of
Education as part of the 2007 Fulbright Lecture
Series, Deng will present, “Meeting special
education needs in mainstream classrooms in the
United State and China.”

Marks reaches 200th victory in Tigers win--Coach
Amanda Marks reached career No. 200 in victories,
and the UWA women’s basketball team snapped a
season-long three-game skid with a 62-52 victory
over Montevallo.

University of West Alabama saw 20 student-athletes
named to the 2006 Gulf South Conference Fall
Academic Honor Roll, including one member being
named to the Fall Academic All-GSC Team.

University of West Alabama’s Office of Alumni
Affairs recently selected 26 students as members of
Livingston’s Early Alumni Development (LEAD), an
organization formed to develop and strengthen
relationships between UWA students and the National
