University of West Alabama honored approximately 300
graduates during spring commencement exercises May
5, with President Richard D. Holland conferring
undergraduate and master’s degrees.

UWA and UA students team up for Black Belt
Action--Honors
program students from The University of West Alabama
and the University of Alabama will come together May
14-25 for Black Belt Action, an action-oriented
service-learning experience. With UWA hosting UA
students in Livingston and allowing them to
experience the region firsthand, the project
involves educational and cultural opportunities and
improvement projects in Sumter County schools.

Gee's Bend lecture provides insight on quilters'
history--The rich quilting legacy
of generations of African-American women in rural
Alabama is the topic of Dr. Richard Bailey’s
lecture, “Mighty Times: The Gee’s Bend Story,” set
for Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Callaway
Schoolhouse on the University of West Alabama
campus.

UWA offering senior adult leadership institute--The
University of West Alabama’s Regional Center for
Community and Economic Development hopes to build a
community of senior leaders in the Black Belt by
providing training and instruction for volunteers
through the Leadership Institute Program for Senior
Adults.

Garden--Sixteen
mosaic stepping stones featuring Black Belt flora
and fauna and handmade by Sumter County
schoolchildren under the direction of artist Linda
Muñoz were added to the permanent display at the
Black Belt Garden on the University of West Alabama
campus.

falls to West Florida in GSC Championship--The
University of West Alabama baseball team made it to
Championship Day, but couldn’t get over the hump as
the Tigers fell to West Florida, 6-1, in the Gulf
South Conference Championships Wednesday at USA
Baseball Stadium.

Six from Robertsdale High look forward to UWA--Six
Robertsdale High seniors will be sweating their way
into shape this summer as they prepare to join the
football and volleyball teams, as well as the
cheerleading squad, this fall at The University of
West Alabama.

| Wilcox County Alumni Chapter fish fry--The
Wilcox County Chapter of the National Alumni
Association will hold its annual fish fry Saturday,
May 19 at noon at Bridgeport State Park in Camden. Proceeds from the event
will help fund scholarships for Wilcox County
students to attend UWA. The event will also honor
the memory of chapter president Claude Ezell. For
