UWA observes Constitution Day with desegregation
authority--The
University of West Alabama will host a free luncheon
in observance of Constitution Day, a federal holiday
that recognizes the ratification of the U.S.
Constitution, on Monday, Sept. 17 at noon at the
Bell Conference Center.
Distinguished guest speaker Dr. Tony
Freyer, University Research Professor of History and
Law at the University of Alabama, will discuss the
significance of the holiday and his latest book,
Little Rock on Trial: Cooper vs. Aaron and School
Desegregation.

Opening reception for Gee's Bend quilt exhibit
Sept. 19--The
University of West Alabama will display a collection
of quilts from the famed Gee’s Bend community
throughout the semester. The opening reception for
the exhibition, “From My Hands: Quilt Creations by
Gee’s Bend’s Polly Bennett,” will be held Wednesday,
Sept. 19 from 1-3 p.m. in Webb Hall Parlor. The
quilts are part of the collection of Dr. Geraldine
Watts Bell.

Delta Chi alumni scholarship honors former
president--Delta
Chi alumni recently awarded the Matt Byrne Memorial
Scholarship to a pair of University of West Alabama
students. The scholarship, established in 2007,
honors the memory of longtime friend and former
Delta Chi chapter president Matt Byrne.

UWA honors former trustees Sept. 10--The
University will honor six former trustees upon their
appointment as Trustees Emeriti with a reception
Monday, Sept. 10 from 2-3 p.m. in Webb Hall Parlor.
Robert Hugh Edmonds, Billy F. Hall, Joseph C.
McCorquodale Jr., Leigh Pegues, I. Drayton Pruitt
Jr. and Winton E. Wise received the designation in
acknowledgement of their distinguished service to
the institution. The reception is open to the
public. |

UWA
Tigers off to school-record 8-0 start--The
UWA volleyball team moved to 8-0 on the season after
claiming wins over Alderson-Broaddus College and
Augusta State on Saturday at the Carson Newman Labor
Day Tournament. The unblemished start by the Tigers
is the best in school history.

Tigers
fall 21-23 to Samford to open season--The
University of West Alabama dropped a hard-fought
23-21 decision to in-state foe Samford Thursday
night to open the 2007 campaign in front of 10,483
at Seibert Stadium.

named UWA rodeo coach--The
University of West Alabama Athletic Department has
announced Chad Phipps as the new head coach of the
UWA rodeo team, effective immediately.

| Sumter County chapter tailgate planned for Sept. 8--The
Sumter County alumni chapter will host a tailgate
prior to the first home football game against
Concordia College on Saturday, Sept. 8, from
5-6:30 p.m. at the President's Home. For more

| National Alumni Association hosts several
events Sept. 29--The NAA will
host three events on Saturday, Sept. 29 prior to the
UWA vs. Harding football game at 7 p.m. at Tiger
Stadium. A reunion of friends from the early '70s
will enjoy lunch at the Student Union
Building at noon. The '71 College World Series
baseball team will get together at 3 p.m. at the
Spence-Moon House, and the team will receive
recognition during halftime of the football game.
Also, the Tuscaloosa County alumni chapter is
invited to tailgate at the President's Home from
5-6:30 p.m. For more information about any of these
